Career Academies

Career Academies

The academy involves teachers from different subjects working together as an academy team, sharing common planning time to collaborate on the implementation of the academy concept, develop integrated curriculum, and provide assistance to individual students. Then scheduling students in cohort groups establishes a family-like atmosphere and results in meaningful student-teacher interaction that supports rigor, relevance, and relationships.

The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) has recognized the career academy model as a comprehensive approach to school restructuring at the secondary level. Career academies are designed to help young people become more engaged in school, prepare for postsecondary education, and acquire workplace skills. By design, these three central elements of a career academy lead to a school that is rigorous, relevant, and relational. The approach provides a successful secondary school organizational structure that links core academics with career and technical curriculum.  The academy is enhanced with a common career theme, curricular innovations, business partnerships, employer opportunities to participate in local education, community involvement, and partnerships with higher education.
